End of year Pottery Place Setting

Students will make at least one cup, plate, bowl place setting on the wheel to be fired and glazed so that every piece is usable. This will grow their wheel throwing skills and challenge them to get the clay perfectly centered to have beautiful and functional pieces.

It will also grow their glazing skills as foodware needs to be a nice even coat of glaze everywhere with no exposed clay on the inside of the pieces as that can be toxic to eat on.

Dear Artist and Art Enthusiast

The Billings Arts Association Images Art Grant encourages and supports art education in our community. We know how art and art appreciation has shaped our lives, we hope we can do a small part to help shape the lives of others.

Your Donation to, and your membership in the Billings Arts Association helps fund these grants. The Association has a long history of supporting the arts in Billings, starting with a fund drive in the 50's to make an art center of the old county jail, which is now the Yellowstone Art Museum. We are proud of our heritage, and are dedicated to continuing it; by giving back to the community though art education, support, and financial assistance.

Your membership, and your donation is appreciated.

Advanced Ceramics students are supporting the Empty Bowl fundraiser to raise money for charitable causes, notably hunger, food security, and poverty. The central concept of this fundraiser is serving meals in handmade bowls. The bowls are usually filled with soup and served with bread to the attendees. The students will have the opportunity of producing bowls in the experience of a production potter. And through this project execution, students will see first hand the impact of community building, and the ways that art can be used to bring together peoples of all cultures.

The images grant money will be used to buy the expensive color glazes the students’ needs to complete the bowls.

BAA member Barbara Garrett will provide a presentation focused on pastel art, and the grant will provide the professional quality supplies that go into pastel artwork.  Barbara will identify five major shapes in a landscape, blocking in an underpainting with pastels using a five step value range, setting the underpainting with water, and working over the dry underpainting with finishing pastels.

This grant will supply Shepherd middle school students with sets of professional quality pastel supplies.  These students will begin to use some professional quality art supplies that enhance their art efforts and help them realize what art can bring into their lives.
